Dreamweavers

The design of this wedding accessories store is like the perfect wedding—an event that requires both the precision of a military parade, as well as the froth and bubbles of a glass of celebratory champagne.

I tailored a dreamy confection in white for this store. Evoking the dreaminess and grandeur of the big occasion is a pared down version of a church arch, underneath which newlyweds traditionally pass. The theatricality of the occasion is underscored by a layer of heavy white drapes behind the arch, which cleverly conceals a storeroom in its compact 600-sq-ft-footprint.

The interiors never fall into fussy feminine aesthetics, thanks to its clean symmetry and purity of forms. Following the gentle curve of the arch are round 6-mm-thick epoxy-clad steel plates suspended in mid-air to display the shop’s wares. Their height can be adjusted and they are held in place by fine steel tension cables. The robust design is a fitting allusion to the light and delicate offerings of the shop.
